Last Call for the Emotion Thesaurus!!!

It's been over 10 months and 56 emotions since beginning the Emotion Thesaurus, can you believe it?

Becca and I are working on the last few emotions on our list, so before we reach the end we wanted to turn things over to all our wonderful blog supporters to see if you have any emotion choices you'd like to see covered.

Currently we have Worry, Hopeful and Lonliness left, and we will also be doing a final post on how characters exhibit pain, simply because many emotions can manifest as such, and pain is something that we writers tend to get 'stuck' on when trying to show actions for it.

So please, take a look through the list in the toolbar. If you have an emotion that you would like us to cover that isn't similar to one already posted, please name it in the comment box and we'll see what we can do. :-)

How about lust? Or joy?

Becca said...

Thanks for the suggestions! Joy is actually combined with the happiness entry, and lust we included in love/attraction.

Lust is one we downplayed as well, simply because Becca and I both write for children. 90% of the actions for lust are, well, significantly higher than PG, so we have to be careful here.

How about fatigue? Has that been covered already?

I attended a writers' retreat over the weekend and gave 12 of my writer friends the link to your wonderful emotional thesaurus, explaining how helpful it has been to me in my writing. Thanks for such a great tool. I had one I needed and couldn't find, and now I don't remember it. That's what happens when you don't write it down.

You two have done an amazing job on this Emotion Thesaurus. I can't count how many times I've referred fellow writers to your website. :) Thanks for taking so much time to put this together for us. :)

The only emotion I could think of was hopelessness, but you've already got that covered under Powerless/Defeated. :) You guys rock! :)

What about sarcasm? Many of my characters seem to be sarcastic.

Thanks,

Mino

I would propose "desire", and immediately point out that it is something different from lust, although there are some overlaps.

It's a tricky one, and I'm really interested to see what you'll make out of it.

Fatigue & sarcasm are more reactions to a body's needs or as a result of an emotion rather than an emotion themselves. But Becca and I may still address these as part of an addendum to the Emotion Thesaurus, so keep em coming!

I can't think of any that don't form part of the ones that you have already done. Great work! with this thesaurus done, what's next?!

What about the feeling of being cheated? Example: He felt cheated when another got the job. OR: She felt cheated she didn't get to go to the prom.

Next time I'm looking and don't find what I need (very rare), I'll let ya know! You may be all done with it by then, but possibly it will pull you out of retirement.

No suggestions for the thesaurus, simply a BIG thanks for the work done!

Doubt, fatigue, true grief.... hmmm.... I think I may have had another the other day when I was writing.

I do love your thesaurus, by the way, I keep the page open when I'm writing and editing scenes so I can get things right :o)

You two have done a wonderful job!

Thanks everyone for their overwelming support of us during this Thesaurus, and for your ideas for future emotions. Becca and I plan on rolling out another Thesaurus after this one is complete (including the addendum), so never fear!

Thanks for passing on the word, Gutsywriter, and for everyone's kind words. You guys are all the best!!

We're so excited that this has been a real, useable resource for you all. Hopefully the next one(s) will be as helpful :).

This thesaurus will still be available, right? Some of us can't live without it!

Angela said...

Absolutely--in one way shape or form, we promise. :-)

I haven't been able to think of anything else, so I just wanted to add my large THANK YOU to the pile.

I love the Emotion Thesaurus!

Oh good! The last question/answer set my mind at ease ... I was worried your Emotion Thesaurus was going to go away! Glad to hear it will remain available ... it has been such a fabulous resource for triggering ideas! Thank you for all your hard work!
